Antenna Efficiency: What is it?

Antenna efficiency measures the power generated by radiation resistance versus total resistance, identifying design flaws and other factors affecting signal reception. Regular testing can prevent permanent damage and restore lost efficiency.

“Antenna efficiency” is a term used to describe the relationship between the amount of power generated in the form of radiation resistance and the total amount of resistance generated by the antenna. In essence, this type of report allows you to ascertain how much resistance is lost as the antenna is used, and how that loss affects the overall performance of the device. Measuring antenna efficiency can often help identify any problems inherent in the antenna design, as well as help determine other factors that may be interfering with the antenna’s ability to receive signals efficiently.

The whole point of antenna efficiency has to do with how much power is being received into the device and what is happening with that power once it is used by the antenna. Measuring the efficiency can help determine if there is something wrong with the feeder and also if there is something wrong with the correct antenna that is causing most of that power to be lost or dissipated during operation . Typically, high antenna efficiency means that the power supply is being utilized to best effect and that the antenna is operating at or near maximum efficiency. If the efficiency is low, it means that a significant amount of power is not being radiated properly and is lost during operation.

There are a number of factors that can negatively affect antenna efficiency. One has to do with the design of the antenna itself. If the design includes flaws that prevent power from flowing properly through the device, the efficiency rate will be lower. At the same time, factors such as a bad connection to a power source or even excessive wear on the wires that provide a means of receiving power from that source could be the reason for the antenna’s less efficient operation. Problems with coils and grounding can also have a negative effect on overall antenna efficiency, even if the design is considered one of the higher quality efforts.

Measuring antenna efficiency is important, as the process can alert operators to developing reception and transmission quality problems. By taking the time to test your antenna on a regular basis and compare the changes in efficiency from period to period, you can identify problems early before there is a chance those problems cause permanent damage to your equipment. Often a simple repair or replacement of one or more components will restore lost efficiency and allow you to continue using the antenna for a longer period of time.
