Anxiety and dizziness are often related, with dizziness being a common symptom of anxiety. Patients may not realize they have anxiety and experience physical symptoms without emotional symptoms. Anxiety and dizziness are related because many people experience mild to extreme dizziness as a symptom of anxiety. This can occur in its mildest form for hours or even days, while more severe dizziness can accompany a panic or anxiety attack. Most of the time this will be accompanied by other symptoms as well. Even those who don’t feel anxious may experience anxiety along with dizziness, as anxious feelings are only a symptom.

Many patients don’t realize that anxiety and dizziness are related, and those who do may not know that anxious feelings don’t have to occur at the same time as other symptoms. One may feel lightheaded, lightheaded, out of breath, or fatigued without realizing that they are suffering from anxiety. Likewise, anxious feelings can occur without further symptoms.

Sometimes patients are unaware that they have anxiety because the condition has always been present and may believe that frequent fear, worry, or depression is normal. While symptoms don’t always have to occur together, most patients experience feelings of anxiety at least some of the time, and they often occur alongside physical symptoms.

Because dizziness and other anxiety-related physical problems often mimic other health conditions, it’s important to get a diagnosis from a qualified physician. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, fast heart rhythm, palpitations, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea and sweating. Sometimes chest tightness and pain may also occur. Many patients believe they are having a heart attack during a panic attack and the symptoms are very similar in nature.

If anxiety and dizziness are prolonged and the cause is not known, there may be an underlying disorder. Sometimes chronic stress can also cause these symptoms, so if a chronic stressful situation occurs, patients should get away from it if possible. If this is not possible, such as after the death of a loved one, counseling is a good option for learning coping techniques. Medications can help reduce the severity of symptoms, but are not a cure for most patients when used on their own.
