Are manga controversial?

Manga is a popular form of Japanese comics and graphic novels, but some topics are controversial, including adult content and accusations of racism. Some manga depict hatred and discrimination towards Koreans and Chinese. However, not all manga is racist or pornographic, and there are books suitable for all ages. It is the individual’s choice of content that causes controversy.

Manga refers to all drawn comics and graphic novels in Japan. It is not an anime, i.e. the animated and filmed versions of some comics or graphic novels. Many in Japanese culture appreciate Manga, and there are books suitable for both young and more mature readers.
Despite its huge popularity, some manga topics are controversial. Adult manga can be extremely pornographic and also extraordinarily violent. For example, the manga graphic novel Battle Royale involves a storyline that many find disturbing because it appears to encourage child pornography and child abuse.

Accusations of racism have also been leveled against some manga. The comic Hating the Korean Wave is very vocal in its dislike of Koreans and Korean culture. The Japanese characters in the book are drawn with Caucasian strokes, while the Korean characters are drawn with more Asian strokes. There are numerous negative statements about Korean culture that can’t stand repetition.

Introduction to China is another manga that depicts hatred and discrimination. The Chinese are portrayed as cannibals and all Chinese culture is dismissed as worthless. These comics infuriate not only their intended targets, but also many people of Japanese descent. Not everyone reads or supports manga of this type, and in fact many are furious at such blatant racism.

Accusations of racism in manga are not unique to adult comics. The Pokemon character Jynx was thought to resemble the black face look that made fun of African Americans. The allegation seemed somewhat unfounded, as the character’s blackface more closely resembled a styling trend then popular in Japan. However, other manga have also included the blackface look. In response to criticism of the Pokemon character, other anime featuring Jynx changed her face to purple.

Thus some manga have rightfully deserved some criticism for blatant racism and perhaps tasteless choices. However, not all manga represent such viewpoints. Some children’s manga is especially tame, and for adults, manga can be more interesting than it is racist, pornographic, or overly violent. It is less the art form itself, but more what individuals choose to do with manga that has inspired controversy.
