Are narcissists happier?

A study by Queen’s University Belfast found that individuals with normal narcissistic traits are more successful in work and social lives and experience less stress and depression. However, high levels of self-esteem can lead to destructive behavior. Narcissism originates from childhood detachment and lack of empathy.

Here’s the secret to being happy and stress-free: love yourself… maybe too much. While that might sound like a crappy self-help guide, the fact is that science backs it up. Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast spoke to 700 adults who displayed ‘normal’ narcissistic traits – as opposed to those with narcissistic personality disorder – and found that they are not only more successful at work and in their social lives, but have also showed fewer signs of stress and depression than others. Even those who have exhibited “grandiose” narcissism — i.e. being bossy and show-off — have overcome any negative aspects of their personality through their confidence and ability to succeed. Study author Kostas Papageorgiou said that while such high levels of self-esteem may seem beneficial, they can also lead to destructive behavior. “We need to be able to dominate our personality instead of letting it dominate us,” he said.

Holding a mirror up to narcissism:

The term “narcissism” comes from the Greek myth of the hunter Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection.
According to psychology, narcissism begins in childhood, resulting from a feeling of detachment from other people.
Narcissists are unable to empathize and are therefore uninterested in how other people are feeling.
