Asperger’s signs in teens?

[ad_1]

Asperger’s syndrome impairs communication and social skills, often leading to isolation and anxiety in teenagers. They may have intense interests, struggle with empathy, and be labeled as strange or nerdy. Depression, aggression, and suicide risk are also common.

Asperger’s syndrome is a type of developmental disorder that usually impairs a person’s ability to communicate well with others. Although symptoms are sometimes detected in the childhood years, the diagnosis of Asperger’s in adolescents or teenagers occurs more often. Asperger’s symptoms in adolescents often include communication difficulties, poor social skills, and intense interest in certain topics or hobbies. In some cases, the condition can lead to a number of social, academic and anxiety disorders.

One of the main characteristics of Asperger’s syndrome is the inability to communicate effectively with others. These communication delays can lead to social isolation, especially in the teenage years when socialization is a very important aspect of life. Teens with Asperger’s Syndrome may try to have conversations with their peers, but many times find it difficult to empathize with others. For example, a teenager might not be able to sense when others are having a bad day and just want to be left alone. In this case, the individual may still try to carry on a conversation with someone, causing the person to get angry or upset.

A teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome may be seen as annoying or strange by their peers. In many cases, the individual is usually not interested in the latest fads and fads. He’ll usually wear old, worn-out clothes to school. That’s not necessarily because he has no interest in fitting in, though; he simply finds the old clothes comfortable and familiar. Blatant disregard for fashion trends, especially in the teen years, can often lead others to see an individual as different or strange.

Adolescents with Asperger’s also have a tendency to ramble about certain interests of their own, without considering whether the other party to the conversation is interested. Intense interest in a hobe is another common sign of Asperger’s in adolescents. Many times, this interest will be considered a little childish compared to the interests of their peers.

Typically, the teenager excels in some subjects but struggles in others. Subjects like math and programming seem to be the easiest, as the concepts are more structured and follow certain rules. When dealing with Asperger’s, it’s not uncommon to find that many teenagers follow most of the rules strictly and literally. This is also a contributing factor to social isolation, as the teenage years are typically when kids start breaking rules and pushing boundaries.

A combination of all these Asperger’s signs can ultimately make the teenager a social outcast. He may be labeled a nerd, geek or weirdo and may be bullied. Depression and anxiety are not uncommon in adolescents with Asperger’s syndrome. Some adolescents are also more aggressive towards others because they feel different or marginalized and are also at a higher risk of suicide.
