ATV Luggage Types: What Are They?

ATV luggage includes vehicle-mounted racks, fuel tank boxes, and front or rear-mounted boxes. Rear racks are adaptable but expose items to the elements, while fuel tank boxes are useful for smaller items. Luggage boxes protect contents from dirt and mud, and racks with tailgates can carry larger items. Nylon bags offer protection and come in various designs.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) luggage types can consist of vehicle-mounted luggage racks with associated strapping arrangements, fuel tank boxes, and front- or rear-mounted luggage boxes. Luggage and rack installations on an ATV can greatly increase the vehicle’s carrying capacity and utility. Different types of ATV luggage include lowered or rear racks, luggage boxes, nylon front and rear bags, and fuel tank boxes.

While not strictly a form of luggage, rear racks are sturdy cargo systems that can be used to carry items just as effectively as hard or soft suitcases. As a means of carrying cargo, rear racks are more adaptable than standard top cases as size restrictions are less of an issue. However, they do have the flip side that any item being carried is also exposed to the elements. The rear racks are also available with a raised perimeter to prevent loose items from falling off the rack.

Fuel tank boxes are a useful type of ATV luggage, especially for smaller items, perishables, such as food, or tool kits. Some users are against installing fuel tank boxes due to their proximity to the rider. The location of the box can be daunting for the vehicle operator.

Luggage boxes are a larger type of hard shell ATV luggage than fuel tank boxes. A roof rack has the ability to be attached directly to the vehicle, but can also be easily removed if manual transport of the box is required. This type of ATV luggage has the added benefit of protecting the contents of the boxes from the elements and dirt and mud that can be kicked up by the vehicle’s tires.

Racks are similar to rear racks with a raised perimeter but feature a deeper storage area and a tailgate that can be lowered independently. This feature can be useful when loading heavy items into the rack. By providing this tailgate function, a roof rack can also be used to carry items that would not normally fit within the perimeter of the roof rack.

Finally, there is a range of nylon front and rear bags designed for use with installed rack systems. This type of ATV luggage is less bulky than rigid luggage boxes, but still offers a good level of protection for the contents. Coordinating sets of soft nylon bags come in a range of designs with various pockets and finishes, including camo effects.
