In most cases, an automotive service writer acts as a liaison between an auto repair customer and automotive technicians. He is usually the first person a customer interacts with at a repair shop or dealership and is responsible for creating a work order, estimating charges, and confirming the fidelity of any repairs performed. The auto service writer, sometimes also referred to as a service consultant, is often described as the face of the body shop. Customers rarely get to interact directly with repair technicians. In most cases, they should rely on the service provider’s statements and estimates and channel all inquiries through that person.

Customer service is the main part of any automotive service engraver job. The service recorder is usually the person a customer talks to on the phone when service is first scheduled and is also the person who greets the customer in the store. Generally, it is up to the writer to explain all procedures and answer any questions that may arise. Most of the time, the service person is also responsible for arranging a rental car or a dealership lender if repairs take longer than a day.

Checking repairs as they progress is also a part of almost every automotive service engraver job. If a repair is taking longer than expected or appears to cost more than initially estimated, it is the responsibility of the writer to pass this information on to the customer. Service writers often spend a lot of time switching between the front desk and the back shop. The more clients a service provider handles at the same time, the more complex the job becomes.

After a car is satisfactorily repaired, usually the service provider helps the customer navigate the paperwork. He or she is also responsible for collecting payment. The job usually doesn’t end when the customer leaves, however. Building and following up on relationships are important requirements for anyone who writes automotive services, at least as far as success on the job is concerned. Forging lasting relationships between clients is one of the main ways service writers keep their businesses bubbling.
