Baby shower games can be a fun way for guests to participate and win prizes, but not all showers are suitable for games. Common games include “Don’t Say Baby,” guessing mom’s waistline, and memory games. Other games can be more active, such as blind diaper changing. Plan games for the beginning of the shower and leave time for conversation and gift opening.
In many bashowers, games for bashowers are standard. These can be a fun way for guests to participate more fully in a shower. They can also be a great way to give some small gifts to shower attendees, having prizes for game winners. On this front, showerers and expectant mothers probably shouldn’t accept the prizes while being allowed to play the games. Not all shower rooms are equally suitable for games; quick office parties during a short lunch break may mean too little time for visits and games for the bashower.
There are numerous baby shower games out there, and there are websites and books that spend a lot of time listing them. It would be difficult to make an exhaustive list, but there are certainly some games that are particularly fun and quite common to basshowers. One of the easiest games to play, though the hardest to win, is the “Don’t Say Baby” game.
Each participant is given a diaper pin, which they can keep until they say the word baby. Any other guest can “catch” someone who says child and claim her pin. The winner at the end of the shower is the person with the longest strand. Some guests like this game, but others don’t like being inhibited from not saying the common word because they want to talk freely about the children and the expected baby.
Another of the common basshower games is guessing mom’s waistline. This can be fun if the mom doesn’t mind her personal space being invaded or her facts about her waist circumference being revealed. It’s not for everyone though, and expectant mothers who are more reserved may not want to play.
More neutral games include a series of guessing games. Many involve estimating the amount of a certain thing in a large jar. This can include candy, if the jar itself is the prize, diaper pins, or anything else that seems appropriate. Scramble word games can be fun too. These can be played in two ways, where words are scrambled, usually common children’s words, and guests have to unscramble them, or where a word related to children’s themes is used to make many small words.
Bashower games that involve memory are also good guessing games. Place 10-20 items on a childcare themed bao tray. Let guests take a look for a minute, then cover the tray. Have the contestants list all the things they saw on the tray, with the ones they remember receiving the most a prize. Alternatively, collect photos of the children from all the guests (make copies so as not to damage the originals) and play a guessing game as to which photo belongs to each guest.
Other bashower games may be more active. Blind diaper changing can be fun with the right supplies, some disposable diapers, and some dolls. Blindfold players and see how quickly and accurately they can change a diaper.
Since baby showers often last for a couple of hours, there’s usually time for two or three games. Conversation is typically part of the shower, so leave room for lots of small talk and snacks. Don’t forget to leave a good half hour to an hour for gift opening, and plan games for the first part of the shower, before meals and gift opening begin.
