Bagel Maker: What is it?

Bagels originated in Poland in the 1600s and were brought to the US by Jewish immigrants in the late 1800s. Bagel machines are used to produce large quantities of bagels, with features such as adjustable cutting blades and conveyor belts. Companies now have their own production machinery to meet demand and offer a variety of toppings.

A bagel is a type of bread, shaped into a ring with a hole in the middle, in which the dough is typically boiled in water and then baked. Many historians believe the food originated in Poland in the 1600s and bagels were common in the United States in the late 1800s as Jewish immigrants took them away. As bagels became more popular throughout the 20th century, some inventors looked for ways to produce them in large quantities. Small bakeries and large 21st century manufacturing companies often use a bagel machine to produce up to thousands of food goodies per hour.

Bakers typically use a bagel machine into which unmolded dough is loaded. The dough is usually cut and then formed into the ring shape, and some machines can also measure out the desired size and weight of the bagel. Rollers are often used in the forming process. In some devices, the cutting blades can be adjusted for specific bagel sizes, depending on the needs of the order.

A bagel machine may be designed to produce high volumes of product, but may still be suitable for use by a small business. Sometimes it includes a scale mechanism to make sure every bagel in a batch weighs the same. Features that are often desired are sealed components to reduce maintenance, while some systems do not use oil which can leak out of the slurry. Many bagel machines have conveyor belts that can move the dough onto rollers for processing. Some systems have more complex vertical and horizontal conveyors and connect to computer systems that can help monitor and control production.

Gears, electronic dough-feed clutches, and wheels are included in some types of bagel machines. Many of them also have parts to adjust the shape and size of the dough if it’s not quite right. The first bagel maker was invented in the 1960s. A time meter was used on many early machines so that companies that leased them could charge bagel makers for every dozen bagels produced.

Companies now often have their own production machinery to make enough bagels to meet demand. In addition to bakery buns, these companies may also specialize in different varieties and spreads that go with the foods. They often add bagel toppings like sesame or poppy seeds, as well as cinnamon and raisins, for a wider selection.
