Bandana Hijab: What is it?

A bandana hijab is a way of tying a headscarf, often worn by Muslim women or in areas where the hijab is prohibited. It can be worn in two ways, either under a longer scarf or over an elastic cap covering the neck. The controversy surrounding the hijab has led some women to choose the compromise option of a headscarf instead.

The term “bandana hijab” is used to describe a particular way of tying a headscarf. Traditionally, a bandana is a square of cloth worn around the neck or over the head. When worn as a head covering, it is usually tied at the back of the head, covering the scalp and keeping the wearer’s hair, if any, out of their face. Some women who wear the hijab, the headscarf worn by Muslim women or women living in Muslim countries, will wear a bandana-style tied headscarf as part of their head covering. Women and girls living in areas that prohibit wearing the hijab in public may also wear a headscarf instead of a traditional hijab.

A bandana hijab can be worn in two ways. The first is to tie a bandana-style scarf over your head as under the scarf, and then wear an additional longer scarf over the first scarf. This style of hijab bandana uses the scarf under the scarf to cover and control the hair, while the scarf over covers the neck and, in some cases, the shoulders and chest. By wearing two scarves together, a woman can mix or contrast her colors and patterns, creating a modern and attractive look.

The other hijab bandana style is to wear a long elastic bottom that completely covers the neck. These caps are similar to hoods, covering the head but exposing the face. The wearer can tie a smaller bandana-style scarf over the cap. When wearing this style, a woman may need to ensure that the clothing she wears matches the edges of the scarf to provide the necessary coverage.

Wearing the hijab is the subject of some controversy, as some Islamic scholars insist that women are religiously required to cover their heads in public, while others believe that covering is primarily a cultural practice. In fact, some countries have instituted laws that prohibit the wearing of a hijab in certain settings, such as schools or government offices, or that may even prohibit the use of head coverings in public. In such situations, women may choose to wear a headscarf instead of a traditional hijab. While the bandana may not provide the same amount of coverage as a full bandana, it does provide hair coverage, which is a compromise option that may be acceptable to both women and some government officials.
