Best nebulizer kit: how to choose?

Choose a nebulizer kit based on personal preference, with options of a snorkel or mask. Mouthpiece kits are preferable for jet-type nebulizers, while masks are for those who cannot keep a mouthpiece in place. Disposable or reusable kits are available, with the choice depending on frequency of use.

Different nebulizer kits work equally well, so personal preferences should guide your choice. The main consideration is whether you prefer a kit with a snorkel or a mask. Most nebulizers will work with any nebulizer kit. Kits can be disposable or reusable, and small variations ensure ease of use. Misting kits are usually inexpensive and can be obtained easily.

The type of nebulizer and nebulizer accessories usually make no difference in choosing one kit over another. The two most common types of kits use a mouthpiece or a nebulizer mask. Both can be connected with hoses to the nebulizer depending on your needs.

A mouthpiece misting kit is usually preferable, especially for jet-type nebulizers. The nebulizer solution can be placed closer to the user and more of the medication is actually inhaled because there is less space for the mist to adhere to on its way to the lungs. The kit is constructed in the shape of a ‘T’ and the base of the ‘T’ has the tank for the solution and as air or oxygen travels through the top, a venturi converts the liquid into mist.

Portable nebulisers using ultrasonic aerosol means of production are normally mounted such that the device itself together with the reservoir is located at the base of the ‘T’. As the patient inhales, the vacuum created by the airflow carries the mist into the lungs. This device ensures effective drug delivery.

Children or users who cannot keep a mouthpiece in place for the duration of a treatment may need a nebulization kit that uses a mask. The mask is attached to the face with an elastic band. The mist is produced from a reservoir attached to the mask to ensure that as much drug as possible is inhaled by the patient and does not settle on the surface of the kit or tubing which may be used to deliver oxygen or positive airway pressure.

Choosing a disposable or reusable nebulization kit likely depends on the anticipated frequency of treatment and whether or not you will need it for an extended period of time. Disposable kits can be reused dozens of times with proper cleaning and maintenance. However, a permanent or durable nebulizer kit can be used hundreds of times. If more than one person is using the nebuliser, a single-use kit may be preferable as sharing a kit is not recommended.
