A stamp of approval is a custom stamp used to approve checks for bank deposits, saving time for businesses. They come in different sizes and ink colors, and there are three types: eraser, self-inking, and pre-inked. Choosing the best stamp involves finding one with enough custom lines and selecting the right stamp type and ink color.

A stamp of approval, also known as a check approval stamp or commercial stamp, is a custom stamp used to approve checks for bank deposits. Save time for businesses when manually approving each check can take hours. Stamp units of approval are custom made, as information from a specific bank goes on each stamp. Choosing the best stamp of approval involves finding one with enough custom lines for your needs and selecting the right stamp type and ink color.

Approval stamps come in different sizes, allowing for different numbers of lines. Smaller stamps allow for two lines of text, while larger ones have six to eight lines of text. The most common size for a stamp of approval is four or five lines. Depending on your business needs, you may need a small stamp with just the bank name, the message “For Deposit Only” and the account number, or a large one to include the business name and location.

Another consideration with sizing is the number of characters that can fit in each line. Depending on the width of the stamp of approval, companies usually allow between 20 and 30 characters per line. Before deciding on a size, write your approval message and count the number of characters.

Ink color is another consideration for approval stamps. The typical ink color used for these stamps is black, but some companies offer green, blue or red as alternatives. Using different colored inks can help ease confusion if different approval stamps are needed. Most companies that make stamps of approval add an additional cost for different ink colors.

The biggest difference between the stamps of approval is the pattern. There are three different types: eraser, self-inking, and pre-inked. The cheapest and least durable is the rubber stamp. This type of stamp is used by pressing the rubber stamp into an ink pad, then stamping the check mark. The imprint can be difficult to read if saturated with too much ink, and the ink pad usually lasts a few hundred stamps.

Self-inking stamps are moderately expensive, in part because this type of stamp has the most complicated construction. It has a rubber stamp insert, along with an ink pad at the top. At rest, the pad and stamp are touching. When stamped, the stamp goes from the top of the unit to the bottom and rotates to touch the paper. You can typically get a few hundred to a few thousand uses out of the ink, depending on the brand; to change the ink, the ink pad slides out and a new one is inserted into the unit.

A pre-inked stamp of approval is the most expensive. This stamp model has the ink placed at the top of the unit, which is used when the printing unit is applied to the paper. Self-inking stamps typically contain enough ink for several hundred to several thousand impressions, depending on the stamp. Replacing the ink is simple and involves removing the top and inserting drops of ink into the stamp.
