A sushi set can enhance the visual presentation of sushi and includes plates, bowls, and other dishes. When choosing a sushi set, consider the number of people you will serve, the type of plates, bowls for soy sauce, chopsticks, soup bowls, and a bamboo sushi mat for rolling sushi.

Sushi in its many forms has gained a reputation as one of the most visually appealing foods in addition to being healthy and delicious. In order to enhance the visual presentation of sushi, a consumer can purchase a sushi set, which includes a variety of plates, bowls, and other dishes. If you are preparing to make sushi at home, consider the following tips when choosing your sushi set.

First, decide how many people you will serve with your sushi set. Your needs for a small family dinner will be very different than for a large party or gathering, so be sure to choose an appropriately sized sushi set. For the purpose of this article, let’s assume the size of the dinner party seats about five people.

Most sushi set combinations include flat or nearly flat plates, often square or rectangular. These square plates can be used as individual plates for each dining person, or they can be used as a presentation plate for individual sushi rolls. Your sushi set should include five dishes for a five-person gathering. Along with square plates, a sushi set may include a decorative bowl in which to place edamame. Use this bowl as the centerpiece of your meal so that every diner can share the edamame.

The sushi set should also include bowls for soy sauce. These small, rectangular plates are recessed slightly to create a bowl into which each diner will pour their portion of soy sauce for dipping. For a party of five, your sushi set should include five bowls of sauce. Many sushi sets will also include reusable sticks made of plastic or ceramic, or others made of bamboo or other wood. Each diner should have their own set of chopsticks; it also helps to have an extra pair, in case a pair gets lost, damaged or dirty.

Since most Japanese meals include traditional miso soup, a sushi set can come with bowls of soup that match the serving plates. They also come with soup spoons, which have a unique shape that is very different from the typical American spoons. If you won’t be serving miso soup, bowls of soup can also be used as rice bowls or even edamame. Another non-essential item that’s nice to include in your sushi set is a bottle of sake and cups. Sake goes well with sushi, and these decorative bottles should match the pattern of the rest of the dishes in the set.

If you plan to roll your own sushi, make sure your sushi set includes a bamboo sushi mat. The sushi mat is a series of thin bamboo slats tied tightly together to form a mat; it is used to roll sushi rolls into the correct shape, making the job of shaping a tight roll much easier.
