Best used plane: how to choose?

Before buying a used plane, decide what type you need and research available models and prices. Consider job size and choose between handheld or tabletop planes. Inspect and test the tool before purchasing and consider a written guarantee. Industrial planes are stronger but more expensive.

The first decision you will need to make before looking for a used plane is to decide what type of plane you are looking for. Different machines and tools can be classified as planers, so you’ll need to research whether you need a thicknesser, a hand planer, a portable electric planer, and so on. Once you’ve made that decision, research the different models available and find out what the going rate seems to be for a used plane in that category. When you have found a model or two available for sale, always do a thorough visible inspection and test the tool if possible.

The size of the jobs you’re likely to be doing will determine the type of used plane you’ll need. A tabletop plane will be used for larger jobs, while a handheld plane is great for smaller jobs and less frequent use. Handheld planers are generally less expensive than table top thicknessers, and if you’re on an extremely tight budget, a hand planer that isn’t powered or motorized is the best option. You’ll have to choose between cordless and corded planers if you choose a handheld power planer; cordless planers are suitable for smaller jobs and less frequent use, while corded models will produce consistent power no matter the size or length of the job.

If possible, visually inspect the used plane you are considering and test it if it is feasible. Look for obvious signs of damage to the unit and inspect the blade for gouges, gouges or wear. However, a visual inspection will never be sufficient to determine the quality of the planer, especially if it is a power planer. Test the plane on a scrap piece of wood to evaluate its ease of use, power, overall performance, and so on. Remember that even if your used plane seems to work fine the first time you try it, it may not work once you get it home. Whenever possible, obtain a written guarantee or return policy before purchasing.

Think carefully about the size of boards you could plane before you go out looking for a used plane. The size of the job will often determine the size of the tool and for small jobs, a hand plane may be fine. For larger jobs, you’ll need a table plane. If you will be using your plane on a daily basis, you may want to consider a larger and stronger, but also more expensive, industrial plane.
