Brewing beer can be a fun hobby and is easy to get started with thanks to starter kits. The process involves malted grains, water, hops, and yeast. While it takes some education and trial and error, the rewards are great.

Going out to brew beer can be a fun and exciting hobby, and eventually it can even turn into a passion that you can share with friends. While many people who brew beer never end up making beer they find it to be on par with the best beers they buy, often the ability to tailor it to one’s personal tastes makes up for it. Getting started in brewing has gotten easier and easier in the modern world, with plenty of starter kits available so even those who have never brewed before or have seen beer being brewed can jump right in.

Brewing has been around, in all likelihood, since ancient Egyptian times, and the recipes for brewing beer are found in the first written language, Sumerian. Over time, the techniques used to brew beer have changed dramatically and a number of unique tools and styles have developed. In the same way that winemaking has long been an integral art for human sustenance, so has beer, and throughout history it has been associated with different groups, especially the monks of European Christianity.

The basics of how to brew beer are simple enough, but a little understanding of the processes involved can be helpful. Beer requires a malted grain of some sort, most commonly barley, although wheat and rye may sometimes be used. Barley can germinate, or malt, causing enzymes to form. This malt is then broken down and mixed with hot water, activating enzymes, which break down the starches in the grain into sugars that can ferment.

The malt is further processed, into a liquid known as the wort, which is then mixed with hops and other spices as needed. This mixture is boiled, stopping any enzymatic conversions still taking place and producing a rather inert liquid. The liquid is then cooled and clarified and is now ready to be fermented. The yeast is added to the liquid and eats up the sugars created by the malt, turning them into alcohol and also releasing carbon dioxide. The beer can then be placed in tanks for conditioning and after a period of time can be filtered to remove any remaining yeast.

To brew beer at home, once you basically just follow these steps, which are the same steps that big breweries follow too. Brewing beer requires clean containers, good sterilization tools, and a good source of hops, malt, and yeast, but these items can be purchased from a specialty store. Also, you generally want bottles and a bottling plant to store the beer for longer periods of time. There are many kits available for starter brewers, with simple kits available for under $100 United States Dollars (USD) and more robust but still beginner-friendly setups available for around $1000 USD.

In the end, setting off to brew beer is a long way. It is both a science and an art, requiring a fair amount of education and study to do well. And most importantly, it takes quite a bit of trial and error. Most people who start brewing find their first batches to be nearly undrinkable, especially if they have refined tastes. Eventually, however, these initial hurdles are overcome and the rewards are indeed great.
