Bulgaria is a country in Southeastern Europe, bordering Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, and the Black Sea. Its history dates back 7,000 years, and it was once a powerful empire. After falling to the Ottoman Empire, it became a constitutional monarchy, then a communist state, and now a constitutional republic. Bulgaria is geographically diverse and rich in mineral resources. Visitors may find spring the best time to visit, and can enjoy both old-fashioned ways and modern technology.

The Republic of Bulgaria is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It touches the borders of five other countries, including Greece, the Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. However, it is not completely landlocked, as its eastern border is also touched by the Black Sea. Its civilized and documented history dates back almost 7,000 years. The Republic of Bulgaria succeeded the First Bulgarian Empire, medieval territory.

Under the country’s umbrella are Thrace, Moesia, and Macedonia, all of which are considered classical regions, meaning their histories go back to the classical period of ancient Greece. At one point, Bulgaria was a powerful empire that dominated much of the Balkans. However, after many centuries, it fell to the Ottoman Empire. It remained under Ottoman rule for five centuries before regaining the status of a constitutional monarchy in the late 1870s. This was not to be its only change in status, however, as its status after World War II was that of a communist state, becoming the People’s Republic of Bulgaria.

The People’s Republic of Bulgaria did not last long. In 1989, it followed the lead of many other communist lands in Eastern Europe and began to fall apart. The Communist leader, Todor Zhivkov, was ousted in late 1989. In 1990, the Communist Party relinquished control of the state, and free elections (the first since 1931) were held in June of the same year. In 1991, a new constitution was approved, which provided for both an elected president and a prime minister.

Today’s Bulgaria enjoys the status of a constitutional republic. It is a member of the European Union. It is also a member of NATO. His government is considered a parliamentary democracy. It still has a president and prime minister in charge of the country’s legislative body.

The official language of the country is Bulgarian. Its land holdings span approximately 42,823 square miles (110,910 square kilometers). It is geographically diverse and boasts everything from snow-capped mountains to sunny shores. Bulgaria is quite rich in terms of mineral resources, such as lignite, copper, zinc and gold. It is also home to large deposits of manganese ore and an abundance of marble.

Modern Bulgaria keeps some of its old ways while adding modern technology. For example, many indigenous people continue to grow and eat their own produce. Many also make their own cheese and other dairy products. There are also many people who use donkeys for transportation instead of cars. However, the same people who seem to keep the old-fashioned ways also enjoy such modern conveniences as satellite television.
Visitors may find the spring months, April to June, the best time to go. Spring offers the most pleasant and mild weather in the country. Travelers who choose to visit in the winter will find cold and wet weather and those who go in the summer will face hot and dry weather. However, many people like to visit the country during the summer, its peak season. They often go during this time to attend village festivals, as well as outdoor activities, such as hiking.
