When welding thicker materials, the edges must be chamfered to form a single or double V-groove. A single V-groove is used on elements of moderate thickness, including many pipes. The filler is placed at the widest part of the V-shape to help secure items to each other securely. On a double V-groove, both the top and bottom of each item are chamfered. The filler should be placed on both sides and heated in alternating patterns to form the most secure bond possible. This double V shape is typically used on very thick or large objects.
Butt welding is used to manufacture machines, tools and equipment in a wide variety of industries. It can be performed in production plants, on construction sites or in specialized welding shops. Most cities require welders to be trained and certified to operate welders and may also require the use of personal protective equipment and fire prevention measures.
One of the main advantages of butt welding is that it is the only type of weld joint that can be performed continuously by a machine. Series of objects can be passed automatically under a welding machine in an assembly line, making this welding technique more efficient and economical in use today. While butt welds are considered very strong and safe, they are generally not recommended for use on objects that will be subjected to heavy loads or extreme levels of force.
