And there has been some crossover between the HBO fantasy series and real life, with character names like Arya, Khaleesi, and Lyanna gaining popularity for little girls. Fans are also embracing the fictional languages used in the TV show, such as Dothraki and High Valyrian. In fact, a High Valyrian course is now available on the Duolingo language learning app. It was created by linguist David J. Peterson, who developed the Dothraki and High Valyrian languages used in the show from certain words and phrases mentioned in George R. R. Martin’s novels A Song of Ice and Fire. The Duolingo High Valyrian course offers more than 2,000 vocabulary words and also teaches grammar.

The popular series is set in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the neighboring continent of Essos. Power, family loyalty and violence are central themes, but it also explores issues of social hierarchy, corruption, love, sexuality and civil war.
