Asgardia is the world’s first virtual space nation created by Russian-Azerbaijani scientist and billionaire Igor Ashurbeyli. It currently has over 140,000 citizens from 200 countries. Asgardia hopes to become a peaceful society and is working towards getting recognition as a sovereign nation by the United Nations. It also has its own cryptocurrency called Solar.

In 2016, Russian-Azerbaijani scientist and billionaire Igor Ashurbeyli created the Space Kingdom of Asgardia, the world’s first virtual space nation, the “home” of some 140,000 people from more than 200 countries who have successfully applied for citizenship. Ashurbeyli wants Asgardia to be a peaceful society that gives its citizens, regardless of their Terran nationality, a say in how Asgardia is governed. Anyone over the age of 18 with an email address can become a citizen of Asgardia by registering on the Space Nation’s website. So far, Asgardia’s only physical territory is a low-Earth-orbit satellite containing data on Asgardia’s citizens, but Ashurbeyli hopes that’s just the beginning for his virtual nation.

Asgardia’s New Frontier:

Ashurbeyli hopes to get the United Nations to recognize Asgardia as a sovereign nation. This would require the approval of a two-thirds majority in the UN Security Council.
The Asgardia team hopes to create habitable platforms in low Earth orbit and launch manned test flights within eight years.
Asgardia has its own cryptocurrency: Solar, which is registered with the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union.
