A carbohydrate-free diet is unsustainable as it excludes healthy foods that contain some carbohydrates, such as leafy greens and fruits. It also lacks dietary fiber, which is important for digestive health. A low-carb diet, including lean meats, vegetables, and limited high-carb foods, is a better option.

A carbohydrate-free diet is a diet during which zero carbohydrates are consumed. This type of diet is almost impossible to maintain because most truly carbohydrate-free foods are protein. Living only on fish, chicken, meat, and other shellfish is not sustainable. What is sustainable is making these carbohydrate-free foods a large part of the diet to maintain a low-carb diet.

The problem with a carbohydrate-free diet is that many foods that are especially healthy and low in calories still include some carbohydrates. Leafy greens like kale, lettuce, broccoli, and spinach, all of which are recommended as incredibly healthy foods, contain a certain amount of carbohydrate. The same is true for healthy fruits like blueberries, pomegranates, and citrus fruits. To maintain a completely carbohydrate-free diet, all of these healthy, vitamin- and nutrient-packed foods would have to be avoided.

Another problem with a carbohydrate-free diet is that it includes very little dietary fiber, which is important for digestive tract health. Fiber also helps regulate blood sugar levels. High-fiber foods like oatmeal, rye bread, corn, and black beans are all carbohydrate-containing foods. While these foods should not be eaten in large amounts, they are important sources of fiber.

Rather than try to bend over backwards and stick to a carb-free diet, most people in the medical, fitness, and nutrition fields would recommend a low-carb diet. This type of diet would include plenty of lean meats and vegetables, limited portions of high-carbohydrate foods like pastries, and starchy vegetables. A low carb diet would also seriously limit your intake of refined sugar. Although large amounts of carbohydrates can be harmful, leading to weight gain, obesity, and even diabetes, they are a necessary part of a healthy diet and should not be completely avoided.

Most diets, even those that claim to be a carbohydrate-free diet, include some foods that include at least a small amount of carbohydrate. This is because without carbohydrates, a diet is too extreme with protein as the only source of nutrition. Eating protein alone is unhealthy, and while it can cause weight loss, it can lead to other serious health conditions, such as malnutrition and high blood cholesterol levels.
