Abnormal breath sounds can be caused by various factors, including infections, obstructions, and chronic conditions such as asthma and COPD. Chest wall thickness, emphysema, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, and congestive heart failure can also cause irregular breathing sounds.
Abnormal breath sounds can be caused by a number of factors, including an infection, an upper airway obstruction, or an abscess in the nasal passages. Nasal polyps can also cause abnormal breath sounds. Wheezing is an abnormal breath sound that can be heard in individuals who have bronchitis or in children who develop a condition known as croup. Asthma, which is a chronic condition that narrows the airways, is also known to cause abnormal breath sounds. A condition known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often causes shortness of breath and a cough, as well as trouble breathing.
Some individuals are born with unusual chest wall thickness, and this thickness can increase over the years. In many cases, these individuals will experience abnormal breath sounds. This can be especially noticeable during times of infection.
When emphysema patients develop excessively inflated lungs, they are likely to experience breathing sounds that may not be considered normal. These sounds can be heard as a wheezing or clicking type. Some emphysema patients will also experience a rattling sound with every deep breath they take.
Pneumonia, which is an inflammation and infection of the lungs, can cause abnormal breath sounds in some individuals. As fluid fills the lungs, these sounds may be heard as gurgling noises or wheezing. The abnormal breath sounds usually go away after the infection has cleared up.
When an individual experiences airway inflammation on a recurring basis, this condition is known as bronchiectasis. This condition often produces breathing such as wheezing, clicking, or rattling. Some individuals who breathe in irritants from pollution may also have trouble breathing and unusual breath sounds.
Cystic fibrosis patients will often notice abnormal breathing sounds, especially during physical exertion. Cystic fibrosis causes a thick buildup of mucus that adheres to the lining of the lungs, causing chronic coughing and trouble breathing. This condition is considered genetic and often causes serious lung infections. During times of infection, wheezing and other irregular breathing sounds may develop.
Individuals suffering from congestive heart failure are also likely to produce abnormal breath sounds. Heart failure can be caused by several factors, including infections or congenital heart defects. When weakened heart muscles fail to pump blood effectively, fluid can build up in the lungs, causing abnormal breathing sounds.
