Body aches can be a sign of various conditions, including infections, overexertion, and disorders such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Some causes, like mono and acrodynia, require medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.

The human body has many ways of noticing when something is wrong or just plain wrong. Body aches are one way the body communicates when something is potentially wrong. The cause of the body aches cannot be a cause for alarm; however, chronic pains throughout the body can manifest as an infection, an invading pathogen, or other serious biological disorder.
Body aches tend to be a common occurrence after a workout. After rigorous exercise, the body will seek to recover by actively seeking to repair small tears in the muscles caused by the exercises of the body in constant motion. Healing these tears will result in bigger and stronger muscles. Full-body aches are only part of the package for people who train rigorously.

The onset of infectious diseases such as the common cold or the flu will be accompanied by chronic pain throughout the body. These types of body ailments are caused by an uninfected person coming in contact with the cold virus. Once infected, the immune system will release white blood cells to metabolize the infected cells, which can result in transient aches and pains in the body.

A very common cause of body aches is viral mononucleosis, commonly known as mono or “kissing disease” as it is most commonly transmitted through saliva. Other common symptoms of mono are a severe sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and general malaise including sleepiness and wanting to sleep more than normal. Also, the spleen or liver can become enlarged and potentially dangerous to the body. Mono can only be diagnosed by a blood test, severity can only be diagnosed by a doctor.

Acrodynia, a condition that occurs when an individual comes into contact with mercury, can result in nerve damage, discoloration of the body’s extremities, and chronic pain throughout the body. The pains are caused by the body’s immune system activating the lymph nodes, allowing the immune system to eradicate the heavy metal from the body. As the body tries to ward off acrodynia, body aches and pains generally occur.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder with symptoms ranging from body aches, extreme tiredness, trouble sleeping, and memory problems. The cause of fibromyalgia is not easily known, but it has been noted that it is linked to genetic factors, infections and trauma. Fibromyalgia is known to cause body aches all over, chronic nerve pain, and reduced vitality.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disorder that shares similar symptoms to fibromyalgia. An infected person tends to be constantly tired, even after extensive bed rest. The condition is known to cause aches all over, as the body will seem to lack enough rest to energize itself. One known difference between fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers is that people infected with fibromyalgia can only be cured with a combination of bed rest and medication, whereas chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers still feel sore, even with a ample rest.
