Nighttime itching can be caused by various factors, including medical conditions, irritants, allergies, and mental stress. It can interfere with sleep and may be a symptom of serious health issues such as liver or kidney disease, cancer, or menopause-related dry skin. Allergies, insect bites, and infestations can also cause itching at night.

When itching occurs at night, it can become more than just a nuisance. It can also interfere with a person’s ability to sleep. There are many things that can cause itching at night; ranging from serious health conditions to insect bites. Interestingly, there are some types of itching that only affect a person at night. Others, however, may be present all the time but only become apparent when a person tries to lie down and rest.

In some cases, medical conditions or bodily changes cause night itching. For example, a person may have itching that develops as a symptom of liver disease, kidney disease, or even cancer; sometimes itchy skin also develops due to dry skin related to menopause. In many cases, health-related itching may be present during the day, but a person is less likely to notice it if they are busy. Once you try to rest at night, however, you may find the itching more noticeable. As for itching during menopause, it can become more of a problem at night when a woman is less likely to drink fluids.

In some cases, night itching occurs due to an irritant that gets on the skin at bedtime or at bedtime. For example, a person may take a hot shower or bath before going to bed. If so, hot water can dry out your skin and cause itchiness. Using a harsh soap in your bath before bed can have the same effect. Similarly, a person may itch at night because the detergents he uses to wash his sheets, blankets, and pajamas irritate his skin.

Allergies and insect bites can cause itching at any time, even at night. Like some health conditions, they can itch during the day, but an individual may notice the discomfort more at night. Also, something as simple as a fan that raises the hair on a person’s arm can cause itchiness at night.

In some cases, a person may itch at night because something is crawling on him. For example, he might have lice or crabs and notice the itching they cause more at night when he’s lying down. Similarly, a person may experience this itch from bed bug or flea bites.

While many causes of night itching are physical in nature, a person can also experience itchiness due to mental stress. During the day, he may be too busy to take the time to focus on things that concern him. At night, however, he may focus on worrisome thoughts and experience stress-related itching as a result.
