Toe pain can be caused by various factors such as fractures, ingrown toenails, calluses, and bunions. Wearing high-heeled shoes is the most common cause of toe pain in women. Podiatrists recommend wearing comfortable shoes to avoid toe pain.

Toe pain can be caused by a minor injury or it can be caused by a more serious fracture. Some of the more frequent causes of pain include a broken toe, severed toe, ingrown toenail, calluses or bunions on the feet. Daily wearing of high-heeled shoes is the most common cause of toe pain in women.
Bunion caused by arthritis or wearing ill-fitting shoes can cause little pain in your toes. Hallux valgus is characterized by a deformity of bone or joint tissue, particularly when the joints have undergone a prolonged period of stress. Bunions, and the pain that accompanies them, frequently occur in the big toe or little toe joint.

Corns are calluses that form on your toes from friction, usually from wearing ill-fitting shoes. Big toe pain is commonly attributed to corns, as the smaller big toe is often exposed to friction by wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose, causing the toe to rub against the inside of a shoe. Corns on the little finger heal on their own after the stress that caused them has been eliminated.

Pain in the little toe can also be caused by an injury, such as numbing the big toe or it can be caused by a break at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone, located just behind the little toe. This particular type of fracture, also known as a Jones fracture, is commonly confused with a sprained ankle. The minor pain in the big toe caused by a Jones fracture sometimes goes away with resting the foot, but sometimes a cast or surgery may be needed for the foot to fully heal.

Ingrown toenails are also known to cause minor toe pain. Usually, these originate on the big toe, but they can actually occur on any of the toes. They are the result of the nail edge growing into the skin of the toe. This inward growth causes extreme irritation, swelling, and pain in the toe.

Women are especially at risk of developing toe pain. Such is often the cause of wearing shoes that are too tight, that narrow significantly in the toe area, or that cause stress on the foot by holding it at a particular angle, as is common in women who wear high heels. Podiatrists recommend that women wear high heels only when needed, but allow the foot to rest by wearing sneakers and flats at other times.
