Ceiling lifts are used to lift and store objects for temporary or permanent storage. They consist of ceiling-mounted pulleys, a cable or rope, hooks or straps, and an anchor. Lighter models are suitable for lifting bicycles or kayaks, while heavier models with steel pulleys and frames are used in medical or industrial settings.
A ceiling lift is a device used to lift objects off the ground, usually for temporary or permanent storage purposes. Depending on the size of the ceiling lift, the device will be used for light or heavy duty purposes, although most models of ceiling lifts are quite light. They are commonly used to lift and store bicycles or kayaks in garages with high ceilings to maximize storage space and minimize clutter. The system consists of multiple components: ceiling-mounted pulleys, a cable or rope, hooks or straps to grab the object, and an anchor to secure the rope.
A smaller version of a ceiling lift is suitable for lifting light objects such as a bicycle. Two hooks will be suspended from the rope, one to be hooked to the motorcycle saddle and one to be hooked to the handlebar of the motorcycle. The rope will run through each hook and through two pulleys attached to the ceiling by pulley frames. The frames are usually screwed into a beam for added security and to prevent the suspended object from falling unexpectedly. The user can pull on the end of the rope, thereby lifting the object as the rope passes through the ceiling lift pulleys. Once the bike or object is suspended, the user can tie the excess rope to an anchor point attached to a wall or other solid object.
Kayaks and other items may be suspended in the same manner, but the user should note the manufacturer’s stated weight capacity before attempting to lift exceptionally heavy objects. Many ceiling lift designs are lightweight and use plastic or aluminum pulleys and fiber ropes that won’t necessarily be able to lift some objects safely. If the user intends to suspend heavier objects, he will need a heavier ceiling lift with steel pulleys and frames, and perhaps even a steel cable rather than a rope.
Electric ceiling lifts can be used to lift heavier objects and are sometimes used in medical settings to help lift incapacitated people out of bed or a chair. They can also be used in industrial settings to lift or move exceptionally heavy objects, although these ceiling lift designs are likely to be heavy; they can also be fitted with a trolley system which allows the hoist to travel along a track to a different location.
