Foodservice workers can become a Certified Dietetic Manager (CDM) by passing the MDL exam given by the Association of Nutrition and Food Professionals (ANFP). Qualification requires a college degree, military training, or completion of a DMA-accredited dietary training program. After passing the exam, candidates must activate the certification.
Workers in the foodservice industry who want to become a Certified Dietetic Manager (CDM) have a few different options for earning the qualification. The qualification itself involves qualifying for, taking and passing the MDL exam given by the Association of Nutrition and Food Professionals (ANFP), known as the Association of Dietetic Managers (DMA) before January 1, 2012. The qualification to take the exam will require a college degree, graduation from an E-5-rated military diet manager training, completion of a DMA-accredited dietary training program, or graduation from a state-approved 90-hour service in foodservice management. Upon passing the exam, candidates must go through an activation process to use the MDL credential.
Candidates who want to become MDLs and hold certain university degrees are eligible to sit for the exam. These applicants will need an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in food management or nutrition. Other degrees that qualify a candidate include a two-year culinary diploma or an associate degree in restaurant and hotel management. A candidate with one of the above mentioned degrees simply needs to submit the transcripts along with the required application in order to take the exam to become a certified diet manager.
Military personnel who have progressed to E-5 rating or higher and have graduated from a military diet manager training program may also sit for the exam. Military training documentation and proof of payment are required for this. In most cases, exam fees are covered by the Montgomery GI Act. ANFP will make the final determination on eligibility by reviewing the documentation provided.
Graduation from an ANFP-accredited dietary program will also qualify an individual to take the MDL exam. All candidates in this category must appear on the program’s graduate list, and the candidate will need to submit proof of successful completion of the training program. Graduates of state-approved food service programs with 90 hours or more are eligible to take the MDL exam to become a certified diet manager. Two years of institutional food service experience is required after graduation, however, before being considered for taking the exam.
After the candidate applies and passes the exam to become a Certified Diet Manager, he or she will need to activate the certification. For those who are already members of the ANFP, activation is automatic. If a non-member or student, however, he or she must apply or upgrade to use the credential professionally. Examinees who pass the exam can expect a letter in the mail explaining the various membership levels and corresponding fees.
