Correct tire pressure is crucial for safety and vehicle maintenance. Check the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, use a reliable tire gauge to measure the pressure, and add air if necessary using an air hose. Check all tires for proper pressure.
The control of the air pressure in the tires is of vital importance for the safety of the passengers in the vehicle and for the correct maintenance of your vehicle. Without the correct air pressure in the tires, an accident could occur, fuel economy could be affected, and tire life could be shortened. To check the air pressure in your tires, you’ll need to know your manufacturer’s recommended pounds per square inch (PSI), a tire gauge, and possibly an air hose to add more air.
The first information needed to ensure correct air pressure in tires is the manufacturer’s recommended PSI. This is the amount of air that must be kept in each tire. Tires have a PSI number, but this is the maximum PSI for that type of tire, not the number recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. To find this number, check the inside of the driver’s door, center console cover, glove box door, or owner’s manual.
After you know the recommended PSI for your vehicle, you can verify the PSI that is actually in your tires. To do this, you will need a tire gauge. There are many gauges on the market, and most people are familiar with the little metal ones with a stick that shoots out after it’s applied to a tire valve stem. These can be very inaccurate, so it’s best to use a meter that is digital or a dial type.
Remove the valve stem cap from the valve stem and immediately place the tire gauge on the valve stem to check the air pressure in the tires. This will allow air to flow into the gauge, which will measure the PSI in the tire. If you hear hissing noise coming from the valve stem, that means air is escaping and the tire gauge is not connected correctly. Take note of the reading and if it is below the recommended PSI you will need to add air to the tire.
To add air, remove the valve stem if you have not already done so. Place the air hose nozzle on the valve stem and activate the air pump. Periodically check the PSI on the tire as you inflate it to make sure you are not over inflating the tire. After you have added the proper amount of air, replace the valve stem cap. Be sure to check the air pressure in all the tires on the vehicle to make sure they all contain the proper amount of AIR.
