There are various chef jobs, with the top four being Sous Chef, Demi Chef, Chef de Partie, and Chef de Cuisine. Each requires training and experience, with the Chef de Cuisine being the most prestigious and responsible for overseeing everything in the kitchen.
There are many different chef jobs to be found, and they can all range from working as a private chef, business chef, and even some as researchers. There are numerous titles and job positions assigned to the various stages of cooking, but the top four jobs consider the rest. The Sous Chef is the most common, then there is a Demi Chef and the Chef de Partie who are similar, and then the elite Chef de Cuisine. All four of these positions require chef training and are considered career steps.
Sous Chef is the first of the chef jobs consisting of tasks related to assisting the executive chef. This position is basically the bottom of the line when it comes to cooking, but it is always a learning position that allows a person to rise through the ranks. Sous Chef is considered to be the right person for head chef, and while it can be one of the most arduous positions in this career field, it is also the most rewarding because the chef learns as he earns. This chef is the entry-level position that requires basic knowledge and understanding of specific cooking concepts, but allows the person to make mistakes without having a huge amount of consequences.
Demi Chef is the second tier on the chef job promotion scale. They are experienced chefs who focus on one specialty item like appetizers or sushi. These chefs are sometimes required to supervise less experienced chefs, but they are only considered teachers and not managers. Obviously, with experience comes knowledge, and with knowledge comes success. The Demi Chef position is one step closer to becoming an Executive Chef.
Chef de Partie is the next step up when it comes to chef jobs. This position is basically an experienced chef tasked with supervising chefs who are just starting out. Each Chef de Partie specializes in areas of larger cuisines, such as desserts or seafood, and is responsible for ensuring that these specific areas are prepared to established high standards. This is basically a management position that moves a chef up the ladder of success and brings them even closer to the most prestigious title a chef can hold.
The ultimate achievable chef job, and the one sought after by all experienced and novice chefs alike, is the Chef de Cuisine. This is the top-level chef, better known as the head chef, who oversees everything inside the kitchen. They are responsible for making the menus, adding new dishes, implementing specials, and supervising all other kitchen staff. The Chef de Cuisine is a master who is highly respected and actively sought after.
