Chemical technologists design and develop processes and equipment for various industries, conduct experiments, and provide technical services. They combine science and creativity to improve processes, products, and human life. They typically need at least two to three years of education and may require certification and work experience.

A chemical technologist works on the design and development of processes and equipment for the chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, scientific, and engineering industries. A person in this field can conduct chemical experiments and also provide technical services to a wide range of industries. A chemical technologist can even help design equipment for use in experimentation. Often a person in this field works to help chemists, engineers and other scientists, but this is not always the case; some chemical technologists also work independently.

A chemical technologist is typically tasked with combining science and creativity to find ways to improve processes, products, and even the quality of human life. To that end, a chemical technologist can work to use new materials as well as elements of matter to design and develop, keeping safety and efficiency in mind. Some chemical technologists help develop systems for processing and packaging food, as well as products for use in the food industry. Others might work to make heating and cooling more efficient or to develop ways to power cars. In fact, a chemical technologist might even work to turn waste into new, usable products.

The tasks a chemical technologist performs may depend on the industry he works in and what the employer requires him to do. In general, however, a person with this title is responsible for preparing and conducting experiments; sample preparation and analysis; creation of projects to improve the operation; use and maintenance of laboratory equipment; and helping to develop engineering processes. A chemical technologist can also help with quality control procedures and help operate plants. Some chemical technologists work independently, while others work in teams.

To become a chemical technologist, a person usually needs to earn a high school diploma or a general educational development (GED) diploma before seeking further education. Many employers prefer to hire chemical technologists who have completed at least two to three years of education in chemical or biochemical technology, and some may prefer those with a bachelor’s degree. Alternatively, a person interested in this career can apply to a chemical engineering technology program or pursue a related course. Some employers may prefer candidates who have earned certification in chemical technology or a related field, and some may even require this. Interestingly, however, a person wishing to become certified may need to acquire at least a few years of supervised work experience to qualify for certification.
