China’s air pollution, caused by the use of coal, affects at least 30 cities and can be seen from space. Particulate matter in the air is measured at over 14 times the safe level, causing negative health effects for over 100 million people worldwide.

China’s air pollution can sometimes be seen from space, as seen in satellite images taken by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2013. The dense air pollution, estimated to affect at least 30 Chinese cities , is thought to be attributable to the significant use of coal as a fuel. Satellite images have shown patches of smog extending more than 745 miles (1,200km) across China. Particulate matter (PM) in Chinese air has been measured at more than 14 times what experts consider a safe level.

PM that is smaller than 2.5 microns, or about one-thirtieth the size of a strand of hair, can be hazardous to health because it’s small enough to be ingested into the lungs.
The air quality index in Beijing, capital of China, was measured 1.5 times higher than the level considered dangerous for humans.
The negative health problems attributed to air pollution are estimated to affect more than 100 million people worldwide.
