Knowing how to clean a CD is important for maintenance and to prevent damage to CD or DVD players. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust and mild cleaning solutions for deeper cleaning. Resurfacing products can help with scratches but backup data in case of failure.

If you’re having trouble playing your discs, it could be because they’re badly damaged, or it could just be an indicator that cleaning is needed. It is extremely useful to know how to clean a CD, as it is an important part of disk maintenance. Especially with rental discs, a quick clean can make playing the disc easier and will ensure that dust is not introduced into the CD or DVD player. Cleaning discs is also important when reading data, as dust or small scratches can damage data integrity.

Often, all a disc requires is a quick dusting, ideally using a cloth specifically designed to clean a CD. To remove dust from a DVD or CD, use a soft, lint-free cloth. Grasp the disc in pliers with one finger along the edge and the other in the hole in the center, without touching the shiny part, and gently move the cloth radially outward from the center. Do not rub the disc or move the cloth in circular motions and avoid following the circular lines in the disc.

If the record still looks dirty after dusting it, or if you’re having trouble playing it, it may need a more serious cleaning effort. Several companies make special chemical formulas for the purpose of cleaning DVDs, but you can also use household cleaning products. One of the best cleaners is denatured alcohol, but you can also use a solution of warm water and mild soap. Avoid heavy solvents when cleaning CDs, as they can damage the disc.

Apply the cleaning solution to a clean lint-free cloth and wipe the disc, again radially. When cleaning a CD with a liquid material, be sure to wipe off any excess liquid and never put the disc back in its packaging while it is still wet. Allow the cleaned disc to dry completely before trying to play it again. When you clean a CD with alcohol or a specific cleaning solution, often the cleaner dries so quickly that this isn’t a major issue, but check for blemishes and marks that could interfere with clean playback.
Even after cleaning, a disc may not play properly due to scratches. Some companies make products designed to resurface records, smoothing out scratches so they can be played. Depending on the severity of the damage, these products can be quite effective, but it’s a good idea to back up your data as soon as you’ve repaired the drive, in case it fails again.
