Common money scams?

Scammers are always coming up with new ways to trick people into money-for-money scams, such as work-at-home schemes, pay-to-surf programs, and medical billing kits. It’s important to research opportunities before investing money.

Ads promising overnight riches appear everywhere on a consistent basis. While many people have caught on to pyramid schemes and old tricks like envelope stuffing and chain letters, scammers are always coming up with a new take on the classic money-for-money scam. Unless you are constantly up-to-date with “watchdog” websites, it is unlikely that you are aware of all the money making scams being used today. If that’s the case, here’s a quick overview of the most popular scams now making the rounds.

Work at home. Scammers know that many people looking for an income are stay-at-home moms or people who want to quit their day job, which makes the money-making scam quite easy to target a specific population. A work-at-home-to-make-money scam typically requires you to pay a startup fee to enroll in the program. The simplest scams involve hand-assembling, emailing or sending information to potential business customers, or writing jobs at home. A more elaborate version of the same money-making scam can include promising jobs that use the Internet to get rich overnight.

The Internet has become a paradise for scammers. In fact, “pay to surf” programs, where you are supposedly making money simply by using the Internet, have become a popular money-making scam. The problem with this type of “job” is that you have to pay a fee to access the information on how to do it. The fee, which ranges from $20 US Dollars (USD) to over $100 US Dollars, is never returned as it is almost impossible to find the promised opportunities. While some websites do pay to complete surveys or respond to an email, the payment is rarely more than two or three cents, which means it will take years for you to recoup the initial fee.

A popular version of a money-making scam is done by promising riches to anyone who signs up to a specific program and then handing over only a list of “work at home” companies. These companies are real at best, but there is no guarantee that they are looking for workers at any given time.

Medical billing also falls into the category of an expensive money-making scam. A true profession, medical billing is not something that just anyone can do by buying a home kit. These kits, which sell for up to $900, provide basic software and knowledge, but don’t tell you that it’s nearly impossible for a freelancer with no connections to get a job with a reputable medical office.

If you are looking for a way to earn extra income, do your research. There are many real opportunities, but there are also many opportunists.

Smart Asset.
