A computer game designer creates the visual and audio effects for video games commonly played on personal computers and laptops. He typically designs the game’s storyboards and structures, as well as the scoring scale. A computer game designer may work alone or with other computer designers during different stages of game development.

The first step a computer game designer typically goes through is solidifying their concept. He usually has a vision for how the characters will be drawn and the best sound effects to go along with them. After finalizing his concepts for these elements, he often conceptualizes how the game will be built.

Some computer games are designed to be played by one person. Others require the participation of two or more players. The designer usually decides which option his game will offer before proceeding with a game project.

The designer must also consider difficult content types and levels. Games are typically classified on their content. Categories generally range from games that are appropriate for all family members to those that contain adult-only content and graphics. Skill level requirements are also generally considered important when designing a computer game.

When the game designer gets to this stage, he or she usually brings the game to life with animation and sound. He normally draws his characters and creates graphics for each game level. To make the game flow properly, he must have a clear and concise understanding of how all characters are introduced, developed, and in some cases eliminated from the game.

At this point, a computer game programmer is often included in the project. Some game designers are programmers and play that role too. However, many designers still often talk to other programmers about technical application alternatives.

The ultimate test of a computer game’s success is its popularity among gamers. A computer game designer usually has a group of game testers at his disposal to evaluate the capabilities of his creations. These testers often provide feedback on how enjoyable the game is and whether the skill levels are reasonable and attainable. They also often point out design flaws and programming flaws to designers and programmers.

Formal education for this position is not always necessary. If a computer game designer has a successful portfolio of games, this is acceptable criteria for a potential employer to hire them. Many employers still prefer a certificate of completion or an associate’s degree in a computer-related field, such as computer science, computer animation, or computer-aided drafting and drafting (CADD).
