MKV is a multimedia container format for video, audio and subtitles. To burn MKV files to DVD, they must be converted to VOB using an encoder. VOB includes IFO files for navigational data, and backup BUP files. Custom menus can be created with some software programs. EM Free MKV Video2Dvd© is a popular program for Windows® and Mac® users. Other freeware programs include SUPER©, AVI2DVD©, DVD Flick©, and Avidemux©.
Matroksa video (MKV) is an open source multimedia container format for video, audio and subtitle streams. Before MKV files can be burned to DVD, you need to use an encoder to convert MKV files to VOB or Video Object.
VOB is a container format for audio, video and subtitle streams used specifically for DVDs. VOB is part of the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standard, with unique specifications that distinguish it from other MPEG streams.
DVD files also include information or IFO files that provide the DVD player with navigational data. IFO files let the player know where chapters begin, for example, and point to video, audio and subtitle streams residing on the disc. In case an IFO file becomes unreadable due to physical damage to the disk surface or improper handling, copies of the IFO exist in the form of backup files (BUP). When you convert MKV to VOB, the program will generate the necessary IFO and BUP files along with two Title Set (TS) directories: VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.
A software program called an encoder or converter will take the original MKV file and “translate” it into the VOB files needed for DVD burning. This process may take some time depending on the file size, chosen software and quality settings. Some programs do not include a burner but rely on a secondary installed program such as ImgBurn©, while others convert and burn DVD files directly to disc.
When converting MKV to VOB, you may also want to create a custom menu for your disc. This feature is included in many recorders. You can use the program settings to embed chapters for faster navigation, choose a still image to represent each chapter, and give each chapter a name. The background image can also be customized or changed, as can the basic design of the menu, along with the font style and colors. Options and features vary from program to program.
Windows® and Mac® users can try EM Free MKV Video2Dvd© to convert MKV to VOB, create custom menus and burn projects to disc. This program can also convert other file types to DVD, but it will leave a watermark on all but the MKV to DVD conversion unless the upgrade is purchased. It boasts an “easy mode” with drag-and-drop functionality and one-button functionality for those who don’t want to manage advanced settings.
Other freeware programs for Windows® include eRightSoft’s Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer, better known as SUPER©, TrustFm’s AVI2DVD© and DVD Flick©. Linux® (and Mac©) users could try Avidemux©. For more program choices to convert MKV to VOB, use any search engine and include your operating system with the query.
