MOV is a QuickTime file format for computers with various content and interactive subtitles, while M4V is an MPEG-4 file type for Apple devices with H.264 video and AAC audio. To convert MOV to M4V, use iTunes, QuickTime Pro, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or non-Apple software.

MOV (.mov) is the Apple® QuickTime® digital file format. It is capable of holding a variety of content, as well as supporting internet video streaming. M4V (.m4v) is an Apple® file format used for Apple® devices such as the iPhone®, iPod Touch® and Apple TV®. To convert MOV to M4V, you need a converter of some kind.

When converting from MOV to M4V, it is important to know something about file formats. The MOV format was designed for use on computers and can contain not only audio and video, but also text, sprites and images, each stored on a separate track. It is extendable by developers to contain other media as well. This is done by creating additional QuickTime® components. Another key feature of MOV is that it is capable of using interactive subtitles.

M4V is an MPEG-4 file type. MPEG-4 is based on the Apple® QuickTime® file format and was developed by the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and, after initial approval in October 1998, became an international standard in 2000. Contains H.264 video , a video codec that is part of MPEG-4 audio (MPEG-4, Part 10) and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), both known for their small file sizes. However, M4V produces larger file size than MOV and has no interactive subtitle feature.

To convert MOV to M4V, several paths can be followed. First, a file can be converted to the latest iTunes® versions. To convert a file, select it in the window, go to the “Advanced” menu and choose an option such as “Create iPod Version”, although the exact wording differs, depending on the version of iTunes® used. Resyncing the iPod® after conversion will make the M4V files available for playback on it. You may also be able to convert the files to updated versions of QuickTime® Pro. From the Export pane, choose Movies on iPod. iMovie® and Final Cut Pro® software applications also have this capability.

You can also convert MOV to M4V using paid or free non-Apple® software. A variety of software is available online to convert files and make them playable on your iPod®. Some are even capable of batch converting and can offer a choice of video cropping. Some titles may also offer soft caption support.
