Conveyor Bearings: What are they?

Conveyors transport objects or materials within a space. Conveyor bearings facilitate easy movement of parts and can be mounted within rollers, cylinders, or motor components. Flanged ball conveyor bearings are useful for moving items in various directions and for easy maintenance. Sealed transport bearings prevent premature wear from dirt and grit.

Conveyors are systems used to transport objects or materials from one place to another within a space. Specific system design can vary significantly, and each system is likely to have conveyor bearings that facilitate easy movement of parts. Some conveyor bearings are mounted within rollers or cylinders that make up the conveyor system, while others may be mounted within motor components. Still others can be used directly on the conveyor system to make it easier to move large objects without the use of cylinders or rollers.

Bearings used directly on a conveyor system are sometimes called flanged ball conveyor bearings. They are mounted on a platform or bridge and work because a ball mounted within its own frame will move freely when objects are placed on top of it. Many of these flanged balls will be mounted on the platform to create a surface for objects to roll or slide on. These conveyor bearings are particularly useful on systems that require items to be moved in various directions rather than in a linear fashion. This is also an advantageous system in terms of maintenance, as a single ball can be replaced if damaged without having to replace the entire system.

Other conveyor bearings can be mounted within specific components of the conveyor system. Many conveyors have rolling cylinders in which bearings must be fitted to ensure free movement during use. The bearings are usually pressed into both ends of the cylinder and a shaft will slide through the cylinder and the bearings. This axle will then be mounted on the conveyor frame and the items to be transported will roll on the cylinders. Bearings may also be serviceable to extend cylinder life, although sealed bearings can usually be simply pulled out and replaced with new bearings.

Many transport systems use sealed transport bearings to prevent dirt and other grit from entering the bearing and causing premature wear. Sealed bearings are hermetically sealed with a plastic or metal cover, and the bearings inside are packed with grease to ensure free movement. Non-sealed bearings will instead feature a cone that presses against the bearings and a locknut to hold the cone in place. When the locknut and cone are removed, the bearings are free to fall out of the housing, but they can also be easily repaired by putting fresh grease into that bearing.
