A copyright is the legal acknowledgment of the creator of certain materials, such as written works, works of art and musical productions. Copyright registration is not necessary for an individual to protect their rights or to seek remedies if their rights are infringed, but having a registered copyright can provide additional protection. Copyright registration may vary from place to place. In the United States (USA), a person must fill out the required forms, send a copy of their work to the Library of Congress, and pay a fee.
The first thing a person should do if they are interested in copyright registration is to make sure that the work is theirs. In many cases, creations made while a person is an employee actually belong to the employer. If a person is confident that they own the work, they can proceed by registering their copyright with the Library of Congress.
In some cases, registration can be done online. When creations are registered online, a person must use the eCO online system. You will need to fill out an online form. If possible, you will upload a copy of your work and will be required to pay a fee. This method is usually faster than sending packages to the Library of Congress.
In some cases, it may be preferable to use postal services to register a copyright. Generally, when this is the case, a person will need to fill out a CO form, which they can obtain online. Any form sent to the Library of Congress should be printed in black ink and printed on both sides.
There are special modules that can be used for specific types of creations, such as an SR module for audio recordings, but they aren’t always needed. Some types of creations, however, require special applications. Newsletters and newspapers are examples of this. A person should check online with the United States Copyright Office to determine specific requirements for the type of work for which he is seeking registration.
At the time of sending the application, a deposit must also be sent. Deposit refers to a copy of the creation that must be recorded. There may be special requirements for these as well. For example, colored artwork should be submitted in a way that represents the true colors of the original. A deposit requires the inclusion of a shipping bill.
In addition, a person must pay the copyright registration fee. This is done at the time the application is submitted, not when it’s approved. All materials sent to the Library of Congress by mail must be sent together when they pertain to a single creation. However, each creation should be handled separately.
