Additional cooling may be required for an overclocked CPU, and the CPU may have a shorter lifespan after being overclocked.

A CPU accelerator will not produce the same results as overclocking, as the accelerator will usually increase performance on one application at a time. This type of program is often easier to use than overclocking a CPU, however, and usually doesn’t put the same amount of wear on the CPU. There are several speed up programs out there, and many of them can be found and used for free. More powerful accelerators can be purchased, although these are less common as someone could easily spend the money on a new, faster CPU.
