In an introduction to a later edition of the book, Lewis Carroll addressed the problem, saying: “As it can produce few notes, though they are very flat; and never puts the wrong side forward!” In the original preface, “mai” was spelled “nevar,” which is “raven” backwards. Carroll’s pun was unfortunately lost by a proofreader’s red pen, further confusing the question of the riddle.
A number of people have come up with a creative answer to “why is a crow like a desk”. The answer “Poe wrote on both” is popular, as are “both stand on sticks” and “both come with ink pens”.
