An AED course teaches people how to use an automated external defibrillator, which can diagnose and treat irregular heart rates. AEDs are often found in schools and workplaces, and certification is required for healthcare professionals and designated emergency responders. The course is often part of a larger emergency response training program.

An AED course is a training program designed to teach people how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED. An AED is an electronic device capable of automatically diagnosing problems related to an irregular and uncontrolled heart rate, which can be fatal. AEDs are commonly placed in businesses and schools, so instruction in their use is often needed in these institutions and is offered to anyone wanting to learn. Some AED courses are offered for official certification, while others are less extensive and provide only the most basic knowledge needed to use an AED. An AED course is also offered as part of a larger emergency response course.

AEDs are often placed in various locations in schools or workplaces, often in public hallways or around the offices of those trained in AEDs. As such, many, if not all, people working in these locations are required to take an AED course. Requiring this ensures that if an emergency heart condition arises, someone close will be able to use the AED, possibly saving the affected individual’s life. In some cases, one or two individuals are designated as official workplace emergency responders. In such cases, usually only these individuals are required to take an AED course, but they are expected to keep their skills and knowledge of emergency response techniques up to date.

After taking an AED course, it is usually possible to obtain some type of certification indicating that one has taken the course and has been evaluated by professional AED instructors. Some self-directed AED courses without hands-on training are available online, but these do not offer certification without further assessment by an instructor. An AED course generally must be taken regularly, possibly every two years, in order for one to remain certified. Generally, certification is required for healthcare professionals. Individuals designated as emergency responders may also be required by their companies to keep their certifications up to date – failing to do so could lose their emergency responder status.

Because an AED can only be used to treat a small range of potential medical emergencies, an AED course is usually offered as part of a larger course in emergency response techniques. This course may provide training in AED use, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), shock response, responses to objects lodged in the victim’s throat, and methods of stopping bleeding. In settings such as laboratories and in some industries, proper responses to poisons and burns can also be taught.
