Defrost chicken safely by immersing it in cold water, reheating it in the microwave, or leaving it in the refrigerator. Raw chicken shouldn’t be hotter than 40 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent bacterial growth. Thawing in the refrigerator is the safest method, taking about five hours per pound.

You can safely defrost chicken breasts by immersing them in cold water, reheating them in the microwave, or leaving them in the refrigerator. Handle chicken or any other perishable food with care to prevent the growth of potentially harmful bacteria in the food. It is not safe to defrost chicken by leaving it on the counter or by placing it in hot water because both environments allow the meat to get too hot. Raw chicken shouldn’t be hotter than 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) because anything above that temperature allows any bacteria in food to reproduce and can quickly make chicken unsafe to eat.

If you defrost chicken breasts by placing them in cold water, it will take about an hour per pound (0.45 kg) of meat to defrost. Very large pieces take longer. Cutting the breast into smaller pieces allows the chicken to thaw more quickly.

Make sure the chicken is wrapped tightly so that bacteria from the raw meat doesn’t contaminate the surrounding surfaces. Keeping it wrapped also prevents water from getting into the meat, which isn’t dangerous but can negatively affect the quality of the chicken. If you’re having trouble keeping your package of chicken breasts submerged, try placing a glass baking dish on top to weigh it down. Make sure that anything that comes into contact with the packaging is washed thoroughly afterwards.

It’s hard to tell how long it takes to defrost chicken breasts in the microwave because each appliance varies in wattage and efficiency. It’s usually best to reheat the chicken on medium power for a couple of minutes at a time and see if any parts have started to cook through. It’s also safe to cook frozen chicken without thawing it first, so you can theoretically combine the thawing and cooking processes if you plan to cook chicken in the microwave as well. As always, thoroughly clean any surface the chicken comes in contact with while raw.

The most recommended and safest way to thaw chicken breasts is to let them sit in the refrigerator until completely thawed. This process can take about five hours per pound (0.45 kg), but to be on the safe side, it’s usually best to defrost chicken breasts for a full day or at least overnight. When defrosting this way, make sure your refrigerator is set to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) or lower. The chicken breasts should be kept wrapped and it’s also a good idea to place a plate or pan underneath them so that any liquid that drips as they thaw is contained and can be washed away later.
