A project architect coordinates and manages the design and construction of architectural projects, including assembling plans, choosing materials, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. This role requires strong leadership, communication skills, and experience in the field. A bachelor’s degree in architecture is required, and being a registered architect is preferred. Legal responsibility ultimately rests with the company’s registered owners.

A project architect is a specific job title for the person who coordinates the parts of an architectural project. Some of the elements he or she may be responsible for include designing the project, developing the “plans” or construction documents, and consulting with outside experts. He may also take on additional managerial responsibilities to oversee large projects, although in larger companies or projects, a project manager may be assigned to oversee non-technical details of executing an architectural project.

Many different people are often involved in architectural projects, with the number of people involved varying with the scope of the project. The project architect usually supervises the workers involved in the design side of the project. One of his main responsibilities is to assemble the plans for the building. In practice, this means coordinating with the client and other architects and interns working on the design of the project, as well as other engineers, specialists or city officials who may be involved in the design phase of a project.

Another primary responsibility of the project architect is to determine what materials and construction methods will be used in building the project and producing construction documents. Construction documents are the plans and elevations used by builders to actually construct the building. Another responsibility of a person in this position is to ensure that a project meets local zoning and building code requirements, and that this is incorporated into the building documents.

Being a project architect requires a variety of skills, including the ability to work in a team and take on a leadership role. People in this position must have good communication skills and knowledge of different aspects of the design process. They must also know how to use specific architecture software programs. This is not an entry-level job in architecture and requires several previous years of experience in the field. At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in architecture is required.

A design architect is not always a registered architect, but this is often preferred by design firms. Having a license affects whether the project architect will sign contracts, payment applications, or construction documents. Ultimate legal responsibility usually rests with a company’s registered owners, who are responsible for omissions or errors during the planning and execution of an architectural project.
