Project technicians ensure smooth project operations in various fields, including construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. They examine project plans, record completed work, track materials, and evaluate accuracy. They work with project engineers, attend meetings, and supervise others. They have high levels of responsibility and can stop a project if necessary.

Project technicians perform various functions throughout a project to help ensure that the project runs smoothly. They work in many fields including construction, manufacturing and healthcare. Strong roleplaying skills and the ability to perform tests are required in this profession. While some design technicians secure employment through prior experience, most positions also require a bachelor’s degree.

When a project technician receives project plans, he or she must examine them in detail. Plans are formulated to test certain materials and processes. This helps ensure that they function correctly during the project and do not malfunction. The project technician examines the available manuals to determine their feasibility and proper order. Policies, management books and any environmental legislation related to the project are also reviewed by the project technician.

Recording work when it is completed is generally the responsibility of the project technician. Also, tracking how many materials are used and recording test results are part of the job. Inspecting the work and evaluating accuracy are also part of the technician’s job.

Project engineers turn to project technicians to help them with all aspects of a project. When the engineer is not available to answer questions or discuss problems, the project technician handles them. The technician typically reports directly to and communicates with the project engineer.

Attendance at meetings of project technicians is also expected. They are there to ask and answer questions about materials, testing, and the ultimate goals of upcoming projects. Many technicians keep daily work logs for reference during meetings. Specifications are also recorded in these journals.

It is not uncommon for a design technician to work on several projects at the same time. This requires strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask. The technician is also in charge of defining the daily work plan. Sometimes the technician supervises others as work is performed.

When an aspect of the design becomes non-compliant with regional regulations, design details or company policy, the technician’s job is to identify it and notify the design engineer as soon as possible. If this occurs, the technician meets with the engineer and others to find and implement a solution. Project technicians also maintain a running total of project costs.

The levels of responsibility of project technicians are high. They have the authority to stop a project, remove steps, and direct workers. If a technician fails to recognize a problem in a timely manner, the entire project could be scrapped.
