Different diamond cuts go in and out of fashion. Round brilliant, princess, and radiant diamonds are currently popular. Each cut affects the diamond’s brilliance and can make it appear larger. Baguette and emerald cuts are less popular now.

Diamond shapes vary in popularity, and different cuts tend to become fashionable or less popular as fashion changes. There are numerous ways diamonds can be cut, which can help meet the demand for any type of setting. Round brilliant, princess and radiant diamonds are currently the most desirable diamonds, but everyone will have their own preferences.

Round diamonds can be cut in a number of ways, which can affect their brilliance. Round brilliant diamonds in the modern brilliant-cut style have 58 facets, greatly enhancing their ability to display the play of color and light. A single cut round diamond is actually misleading in name and has 18 cuts. This type of cut is generally used on diamonds less than one carat in size.

The Swiss cut round has 34 facets and represents a diamond in the middle, in terms of light reflection, single and brilliant. Round rose cut diamonds have a very different shape. They have a flat bottom and rise to come to a point at the top. It’s more like wearing the diamond backwards. However, the rose cut can add drama to smaller diamonds.

Oval diamonds are really a variant of the round brilliant. They are essentially slightly elongated through the middle of the diamond and rounded at the corners. They can make the diamond appear larger and can have multiple facets for added reflection. The marquise is essentially the opposite of the oval. It rounds down the middle and comes to a point at the two opposite ends.

Pear-shaped diamonds are hybrids between marquise and oval cuts. They are round and oval, but have a marquise point at the top of the diamond. A variant of the pear cut is the heart shape. Instead of bringing the diamond to a point at the top of the pear, the top is notched to create a heart shape. This cut is most popular with gemstones that are less valuable than diamonds.

Emerald-cut diamonds protect the points of the stone by rounding them off. This is a fairly popular square or rectangular cut in vintage jewelry. The shape does not allow for many facets, which makes emerald cut diamonds not as popular today. A square cut that is quite new and quite popular is the princess cut diamond. Princess cut diamonds have similar facet work to round brilliants, but are almost square in shape.

New work in diamond cutting has also produced radiant diamonds, which are emerald/princess combinations. The top of the diamond has the softened, dropped edges of the emerald cut. However, the radiant also contains numerous facets that give it a lot of light reflection. Due to the additional cutting work on both the face and back of the diamond, this cut is one of the most expensive to purchase.

Baguette diamonds are cut at the top only, in a rectangular shape. They are cut in layers so that the top of the diamond is higher than the layers or steps that the cut produces. Some describe the baguette cut as a pyramid cut style. Like the emerald cut, the baguette has fallen out of favor since the advent of the princess and the radiant.
