Do periods/capitalization matter in Gmail addresses?

Google’s Gmail service ignores periods and is not case sensitive in email addresses. Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and Apple iCloud recognize periods. Gmail has over 1 billion users worldwide.

When Google began offering its free email service in 2004, the tech company did a few things differently, like ignoring periods in users’ email addresses. So if you were the musician will.i.am and you wanted that punctuation in your personal Gmail address, say [email protected], Gmail wouldn’t recognize the dots. You could successfully send a mail to [email protected]. Gmail is also not case sensitive in addresses. Points also don’t count in Facebook addresses. But periods are recognized by Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail and Apple iCloud, as well as organizations and companies that use the Gmail platform under their own domain name.

A strong and growing billion:

Google has chosen April 1 as the date for the launch of Gmail. Some assumed that the ad, which offered users an unheard-of 1GB of storage space, was just another prank from Google.
Gmail was originally referred to by its code name: Caribou.
As of February 2016, Gmail is the most used web-based email provider. More than 1 billion people use it worldwide.
