Does a photo affect truth perception?

Print anything with Printful

Adding a photo to a claim increases the likelihood of it being believed due to fluency. Long-term relationships make people more likely to quickly believe their partner, while strangers are generally not perceived as truthful.

When a photo is added along with a claim, it tends to make it more likely that a person will believe the claim is true. Research has found that when study participants are given a photographic statement, they are more likely to believe the statement than if it is printed on its own. This is thought to be a result of fluency, meaning the brain is better able to remember things if there are more items, such as pictures, associated with it. The more fluent an item is, the more likely it is that the brain remembers it and therefore judges it as true.

“Truth,” a word coined by American comedian Stephen Colbert meaning the intuitive feeling of truth without necessarily having proof, was Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year in 2006.
When a person has been in a relationship for a long time, they are more likely to use the part of the brain responsible for habitual decisions and therefore more likely to quickly believe their partner.
People generally don’t perceive strangers as truthful. In one study, half of people believed another participant would help them as promised, when the actual number was closer to 80%.
