Phase 2 of the Dukan diet, known as the cruise phase, allows the consumption of select vegetables on a rotating schedule along with protein, water, and small amounts of oat bran. Foods like fruit, full-fat dairy, grains, and sugar are not allowed. This phase lasts until a person reaches their ideal weight, with an estimated weight loss of 2 pounds per week.

Phase 2 of the Dukan diet, also known as the cruise phase, is the second of four phases of a diet created by physician and nutritionist Pierre Dukan. This phase of the Dukan diet sees a person go from consuming only protein to incorporating a few select vegetables into their diet on a rotating schedule. In addition to vegetables and protein, a person also consumes a good amount of water, small amounts of oat bran, and avoids other foods. In general, Phase 2 of the Dukan diet lasts until a person reaches their ideal weight.

Unlike the first stage of the Dukan diet in which you can only eat protein with no sugar or carbohydrates, phase 2 of the Dukan diet allows for the consumption of vegetables, which are a source of some carbohydrates and a good amount of fiber. This includes most salad greens, such as lettuce, cucumbers, and bell peppers, as well as asparagus, mushrooms, and various types of greens. Vegetables are also eaten every other day; in one day a person will eat all protein, and the next day he will eat a large amount of protein with some vegetables.

To help keep the body hydrated and reduce the occurrence of dry mouth, which is common among those who eat a very high protein diet, it is important to consume a certain amount of water. This helps keep the body hydrated and reduces the chances of a person experiencing constipation. Water consumption during the second stage of this diet is the same as the other three stages: 6 cups (1.5 liters) to 8 cups (2 liters) of water per day.

During this phase, as with the other phases of this French diet, a person also consumes a small amount of oat bran. This is a dense and complex source of carbohydrates that is believed to help the body process the large amounts of protein consumed. In general, a person eats 2 tablespoons (11.75 grams) of oat bran per day during phase 2 of the Dukan diet.

There are several foods that are not allowed during phase 2 of the Dukan diet, namely those that contain non-vegetable carbohydrates. Fruit, full-fat dairy, and grains are off-limits, although fat-free dairy is fine in small amounts. This includes foods like rice, pasta, and bread and other baked goods, as well as any condiments that contain carbohydrates. Sugar is also not allowed during phase 2.

In general, Phase 2 of the Dukan diet lasts until a person reaches their ideal weight. The diet plan estimates that a person will lose approximately 2 pounds (1 kilogram) per week if the diet is followed exactly and enough water is consumed. At the end of phase 2, the consolidation phase is entered, in which a person slowly begins to incorporate foods that would not otherwise be allowed in the first two phases to maintain their weight.
