A degree in behavioral sciences covers psychology, social work, and anthropology. Students should choose a college based on their desired field and may need a master’s or doctoral degree for certain professions. Good grades and the GRE may be required for graduate-level studies.

A degree in behavioral sciences typically refers to an undergraduate (bachelor’s) or graduate (master’s or doctoral) degree in several different disciplines. This includes all areas that deal with psychology, all areas that cover social work, and some degrees in anthropology, especially those that deal with cultural anthropology. People earn a degree in behavioral sciences by majoring in one of these disciplines in college. In very different ways, each subject trains people to look at and evaluate human behavior, human interactions and the systems or philosophies that can explain behavior and solve their problems.

The first step for people who want to earn a degree in behavioral sciences is to finish high school or pass a high school equivalency exam. Students should look into available colleges to see what types of degrees they can offer. Some will have a wide range and others will only offer a few subjects. The field a person wants to study should determine the choice of college, especially if that field is not available at some schools. While there are many fields that make up the behavioral sciences, there is a big difference between earning a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and psychology, for example.

Students may not be required to declare a major course in their first two years of college, and their choice of school is not as important in their first two years. While there are online schools that offer four-year studies in the behavioral sciences, it tends to be much less expensive to take your first and second year at a community college. This is also true of most four-year offline schools; the price is usually higher than local junior colleges.

In their second year of elementary school, students need to start thinking about an undergraduate degree, and they will have taken a few classes in some of these subjects to help them decide which are the most attractive. They can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining different types of degrees with the leaders of the various departments, or simply with trusted professors with whom they studied. It may also make sense to take a look at websites such as the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, which can provide information on the type of profession a person can enter with the different degrees earned and whether further studies will be required.

In many of the behavioral sciences that have a counseling element, it may be necessary to proceed to the master’s or doctoral level in order to gain employment as a counsellor. People who want to be a psychologist need a doctorate and those who want to work as mental health counselors need a degree in behavioral sciences at the master’s level. Social workers will want to pursue a master’s degree in social work, and those who want to work as marriage and family therapists should obtain a master’s degree in counseling or specifically in marriage and family therapy.

To be able to enter college and earn a degree in behavioral sciences at the graduate level, most people must show evidence of very good grades and some will have to take the Graduate Registration Examination. Some people choose to study online, where entry requirements may be less stringent, but they should check that these schools are reputable and properly accredited. As there may be lab or internship requirements with these degrees, they may also have some participation requirements.
