Hydraulic excavators have various capabilities beyond traditional bucket tasks. Quick coupler mechanisms allow for different attachments such as buckets, blades, demolition hammers, grapples, and augers. These attachments are used for various tasks including leveling, demolition, logging, and drilling.

Hydraulic excavators have various capabilities that go far beyond traditional bucket-type tasks. Many of these machines are equipped with quick coupler mechanisms to facilitate the use of different types of excavator attachments. These excavator accessories can make it possible to use an excavator in many more ways than just digging. The most commonly used excavator attachments are known as buckets, blades, demolition hammers, grapples and augers.

Buckets are the most commonly used excavator accessories. A bucket is typically attached to an excavator arm and has approximately the same internal volume as a blade attachment. The term “bucket” may have come from the buckets used in water wheels and turbines.

Many modern excavators are equipped to use a device known as a backfill blade or attachment. A blade attachment is a horizontal metal plate mounted to the undercarriage of the machine. These bulldozer-like excavator attachments are used to push and level the removed soil, sand, and other material into place.

Breakers are very powerful hammer-like devices that are often used to demolish concrete and rock structures. These types of excavator attachments use an additional hydraulic system of the excavator, which is equipped with a foot valve specially provided for this purpose. Demolition crews typically use breakers in areas too large for a jackhammer or where safety or environmental concerns prevent the use of explosives. Construction and demolition workers generally refer to a hammer attack as a battering ram.

Grapples are claw-like excavator attachments used primarily in logging operations. A grapple is hydraulically operated and has at least two opposing levers which are used to pinch logs and other materials in order to drag or lift them to another location. The grapples are attached to an excavator by means of a movable arm which is used to extend, retract, rotate or rotate the device’s claws. Excavators using grapple attachments are also used for placing pipes and piles on construction sites.

An auger is another type of attachment that is often used with an excavator. These hydraulically powered auger-like devices come in a variety of lengths and diameters and are typically used to drill holes for pipes and posts. Auger attachment excavators are often used in road construction and for installing water and natural gas lines. This type of attachment is sometimes used to drill holes under roadways for pipes to pass through.
