US President Theodore Roosevelt was the first American to win a Nobel Prize in 1906 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his arbitration in the war between Russia and Japan, which led to the Treaty of Portsmouth which ended the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway, and Roosevelt had the honor accepted by the US Ambassador to Norway on his behalf. It wasn’t until 1910 that he was able to deliver an acceptance speech in Norway. Roosevelt did not keep the monetary portion of the award and instead donated it to Congress in hopes of developing an international peace league, which did not occur until the formation of the United Nations in 1945.
